Soapnut Recipes

Soapnuts can be used for an almost exhaustive number of different purposes. These are some of the ways that we at Soap in a Nutshell as well as our customers have been using them. Remember these are only suggestions as there is really not a wrong way to use soapnuts - it's up to your imagination. If you have any recipes not listed here please contact us and we will share them too.

  Laundry detergent

Use 6-8 half shells (or equivalent in pieces) in washbag (or old sock knotted at top) and place in washing machine. Wash as normal. Soapnut shells can be reused 3-4 times depending on temperature washed at (hotter washes have less rewashes).

  Use 2-4 teaspoons soapnut powder and place in drawer (front loading washing machine) or add to top loading washing machine once water has started flowing.

  Multi-purpose cleaner

Add 25g (a handful) of soapnut shells to 500 mls hot water and boil for 10-15 minutes. Add few drops of eucalyptus oil (optional). Allow to cool, strain and add liquid to empty spray bottle. Dispose of shells.

  Add 4 teaspoons soapnut powder to 500 mls hot water and boil for 10-15 minutes. Add few drops of eucalyptus oil (optional). Allow to cool, strain and add liquid to empty spray bottle. This can be used to clean the house from top to bottom - including windows.

Relaxing/Cleansing Bath

Use 3-4 soapnut shells in washbag and allow to steep in hot bathwater for 5 minutes. Add a few drops of your favourite essential oil. PLEASE KEEP AWAY FROM THE EYES

Add 2-4 teaspoons soapnut powder to the bath and relax as the powder works it's magic! Add a few drops of your favourite essential oil. PLEASE KEEP AWAY FROM THE EYES

  Jewellery Cleaner

Make up a mild soapnut/water solution and use to soak jewellery before rinsing, drying and polishing.

Make a paste of soapnut pwder and water and use to vigorously rub jewellery between fingers. Rinse and polish. Alternatively soak in a mild soapnut solution for a while before rinsing, drying and polishing.

Shampoo

Use 3 soapnut shells and 500ml water. Simmer for 10 minutes and add cornflour to thicken if desired as well as any essential oils to scent. PLEASE KEEP AWAY FROM THE EYES

Use 1 teaspoon soapnut powder for shoulder length hair - mix into paste using a little water and wash hair as normal. The shampoo will not lather as you may be used to but it will clean your hair. PLEASE KEEP AWAY FROM THE EYES

In the garden

  Mild solution of soapnuts/water (3-4 soapnut shells with 1 litre hot water.)

Spraying a mild solution (1-2 teaspoons soapnut powder to 1 litre water) on garden plants can help keep some parasites away

  Pet cleaner

  Make up a mild solution (3-4 soapnut shells with 1 litre hot water.) PLEASE KEEP AWAY FROM THE EYES

Dissolve 2 teaspoons soapnut powder in a bucket of water. Stir until dissolved and apply (can also be useful for prevention of parasites). PLEASE KEEP AWAY FROM THE EYES

  Handwashing solution

  Use 6-8 half shells in 500ml boiling water. Allow to simmer for 8-10 minutes and add essential oils if desired. Add to sink/bucket and use to soak and hand wash delicates.

To handwash clothes dissolve 1-2 teaspoons in sink of water and allow clothes to steep. Especially good for delicates.
